In 1996 on its 50th anniversary The Guinness Book of Records named the Fringe as the largest festival in the world and it remains unchallenged to this day.
Fringe 2004 was the biggest ever festival to date presenting 25.326 performances of 1.695 shows by 735 companies in 236 venues. It would take you 5 years and 53 days to see every performance back-to-back. An estimated 15.629 performers were on Fringe 2004 stages, that's more people than athletes at the Athens Olympics (11.000). Big names that have appeared at the Fringe include: Robin Williams, Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson and Jude Law. Theatre, as ever, is the most popular art form (587 shows, 35%), followed by Comedy (23%) then Music (21%). Events make up 5% of the programme, with Childrens Shows, Dance & Physical Theatre, Exhibitions and Musicals each providing 4% of the programme A third of all shows were World Premieres. 6% are UK premieres, 6% European Premieres. In 2004, the Fringe sold 1.253.776 tickets, and was the first time the Fringe broke the million ticket barrier. The Fringe attracts over 1500 accredited members of the media representing 30 different countries around the world. There are also over 1.000 talent scouts, promoters and producers at the Festival each year to discover the next big name. The Fringe has a 73% market share of all attendances at Edinburgh's year-round festivals.
